Service · UX audit

Find out where users get stuck, and why.

A UX audit is a structured review of your product that finds where users get stuck, explains why, and ranks the fixes by their impact on one business metric. I combine analytics, heatmaps and session recordings with an expert review of your key flows, then hand over a prioritised list your team can ship.

01 Who it's for

For products with traffic, but not the results

An audit is most useful when people are arriving but not converting, activating or coming back, and nobody can say for certain why. This engagement is for:

  • SaaS teams with signups but weak activation or trial-to-paid conversion
  • Products where users drop off during onboarding, checkout or setup
  • Teams about to redesign who want evidence before choosing what to change
  • Founders who know something is off but can't see it from inside the product
02 Experience

Evidence first, opinions second

At Zoftware, where I lead product design, I run UX debugging with Microsoft Clarity, Google Analytics and Hotjar, and turn what I find into JIRA tickets for friction fixes that improve conversion. Across client projects, the conversion lift I've measured averages 3×.

I started in Chartered Accountancy before moving into design in 2019, so every finding gets tied to a number the business already tracks, like activation, conversion or retention.

03 Process

How a UX audit works

  1. Agree the metric and the flow. One outcome to improve, and the journey that leads to it.
  2. Read the data. Funnels in Google Analytics, plus session recordings and heatmaps in Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar: rage clicks, dead clicks and where people give up.
  3. Review the experience. Usability heuristics, copy, accessibility and visual hierarchy, on desktop and mobile.
  4. Prioritise. Every issue gets evidence, a recommended fix and a rough impact and effort rating.
  5. Walk through and ship. We go through the findings together, and I can design the top fixes if you want them done.
04 Deliverables

  • Annotated screenshots of each issue, with the evidence behind it
  • A fix list ranked by impact and effort
  • Quick wins your team can ship in the next sprint
  • Recommendations for what to test next
  • Optional redesigned screens for the highest-impact fixes

Got it. Your teardown is on its way.

I'll look at your product with that metric in mind and reply to your email with three prioritised fixes.

05FAQ

Questions about UX audit

What is a UX audit?

A UX audit is a review of a product's experience against a business goal. It combines behavioural data, such as funnels, recordings and heatmaps, with an expert review of the key flows, and ends with a prioritised list of fixes rather than a list of opinions.

What's the difference between the free teardown and a full UX audit?

The free 3-point teardown is a short written review of your product against one metric, with three prioritised fixes. A full audit goes deeper: it uses your analytics and recordings, covers whole flows on desktop and mobile, and ranks every issue by impact and effort.

What access do you need?

Read access to your analytics, such as Google Analytics, and, if you have them, session recordings and heatmaps from a tool like Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar. If you don't have recordings yet, Microsoft Clarity is free and quick to add.

How long does a UX audit take?

It depends on how many flows are in scope and how much data you already have. A focused audit of one flow, such as onboarding or checkout, is much faster than a full product review. You get a timeline with the proposal.

Do you audit mobile apps too?

Yes. I design and review iOS and Android apps as well as web apps, dashboards and landing pages.
